Have you ever stopped and thought about small business and the effort it takes to keep the wheels turning?
Firstly, let’s have a think about large companies such as Woolworths, Coles, or even medium sided businesses
such as Private schools or even the Good Guys?. What do these businesses have in common?
They have numerous employees to cover all the day to day runnings of the business. From janitors, sales staff,
marketing, accounts, HR, payroll, IT, to name a few
Now lets go back to a small business such as ours. All these job descriptions fall to 1 or 2 people instead of
departments This means that during the course of a week I personally wear many hats. To add to all these things
I also teach music three afternoons a week
Sales and marketing are crucial to small business. Without looking for new clients, our natural attrition of
students would eventually be crippling. We are always looking at new ways to spread the word about our
lessons. Last year I became involved with a local networking group for women called Linking Ladies. This has
not only helped to share information about our school but helped me to grow as a person as well.
In 2015, we worked with Digital media marketing specialist Serena Ryan from Serenadotryan.com.au. Serena
assisted us in maximising the search features on our website and started me down the road of writing a regular
blog (such as this) We also started to take our earlychildhood program into local preschools to try and encourage
some interest through these centres
Previous to opeing our school, I had no qualifications in accounting or book keeping, and basically learnt as I
went along, so in 2014 I completed a Cert IV in Accounting to improve my accounting skills
I am really lucky to have Craig helping out in my business as my IT support team. So many small businesses
struggle with this aspect of their business due to the complexity and rapidly changing world of computer
Of course, I still have a family and house to run at home. Both Laura and Alex (our children) help out with the
day to day running of the business and often during the holiday period you will find us either cleaning, painting
walls or preparing materials and resources ready for the coming term.
I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to be able to work for myself and run my own business and grateful
for the assistance and support that I have from my family.
If you know someone who owns and runs a small business, please give them all your support. It’s really tough
out there sometimes and a small business owner must wear so many hats and they are really doing the best that
they can to make the business tick and keep it running smoothly
