Zoom Conferencing software is a wonderful tool to use when working remotely BUT because it is designed for meetings and voices, the default settings do not favour background music.

Therefore there is a few important things that you need to know to optimise your lessons both for yourself on your teacher:

1. If you can, use a laptop computer. I know this isn’t always possible but you can’t change the audio settings on a phone or tablet.

2. Go into SETTINGS, AUDIO

Go to Advanced (bottom right)

3. Advanced- tick the box that says Enable Original Sound

4. Make sure your camera is positioned correctly. The most difficult instrument is the piano.

The teacher doesn’t need to see your child’s face, they need to see their hands!

Refer to the picture on the right for a good view of the keys and the students hands

5. Otherwise, it is the same idea for other instruments with slight adjustments.

For example, Stirngs are focussed on the bowing side (the right) but the teacher needs to see the left hand as well.

Expperiment with different set ups and check the screen to see what the teacher can see, this is what’s important.

The teacher needs to be able to assist and correct and this is very difficult flying blind.
