I have had one of those days!! Computers on a go slow and no internet to speak of all morning! Arrgh!! Sometimes do you think that we were better off 30 years ago before our reliance on computers and the internet? Do they really make life easier or are they the bane of our existence.
For me personally, almost everything I do at work requires computers or the internet. Our entire database system is cloud based so when the internet is down, nothing gets done! Emails of course can’t be read or answered, banking and bill paying comes to a halt and the most drastic of all…NO Social Media!
Consequently I am filling my time catching up on some blog writing that I have been neglecting as everything else seems to get onto the priority list first. Maybe this is actually a good thing. No internet means we can’t connect online but we can go out and connect to friends face to face. An art form that is becoming more and more neglected.
For me, this also frees up time for practicing piano and flute. When we suggest to parents that children need to practice, the usual problems are trying to tear them away from the computer, TV or games on their devices. Maybe that is part of the reason music and the arts are becoming less important to many people. Technology wins out in terms of entertainment. Creativity and discipline, in terms of practice routines become lost in the busyness that is life.
Maybe the solution is to factor in some time each day for those things in life that don’t require technology. Meet up with a friend for coffee…NO phones! Sit down and play a game with the children. Go to the park, the beach or simply for a walk. Learn to play and practice an instrument.
Create your own entertainment and develop a lifelong skill as well as providing pleasure both to the performer and the listener. Join a group or band and not only make music together but create an entirely new group of friends for life.
Lead by example and your children will follow suit. Let’s put away the technology once in awhile and make life about enjoyment of the little things and create memories with our families.
