Dynamic rhythms roots and wingsRecently I was looking for a quote for the newsletter and came across this:

“There are two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots the other is wings”.

This really struck a chord with me. When we are raising our young children and watching them grow into young adults, we try to teach them the best that we can. In everything we do every day, whether we realise it or not, we live by our core values and beliefs. Many of these will be instilled in our young and in most cases they will integrate some of their own. Family will always bring you back down to earth if you start to have an inflated sense of entitlement.

If a person grows from a base with strong roots, a supportive environment and strong family values, they will feel secure when it is their chance to ‘fly’. Some will just fly from the nest but stay close by but others will take on the world and start their own life and adventures in another country altogether.

Those with young children may not feel they can relate to this yet, but think back to when you were growing up. Did you travel after you finished school? Did you get to a point where you were brave enough to move out on your own or even share with friends? These life experiences and steps outside your comfort zone would have been less scary if you knew you had a safe place to return to if everything went pear shaped.

Unfortunately, we didn’t all have this start to our adult life and for some it was a much more rocky and rough ride. Often friends become family, especially if the family we are born to isn’t quite what we need to succeed in life and grow into our best selves. We need to seek out those that hold similar core values to ourselves and are there to support us through good times and bad.

Growing up with strong core values, will help a young adult to remain grounded even if they excel to great heights or decide to travel the world. They will always know where home is(whether with family or friends) and that it is an open door and a safe haven to return to if things get rough. With your roots planted firmly in the soil, the world is your oyster and anything is possible.
